An Alternative London Marathon

We were tasked by The Tower, which is the official hotel for the London Marathon to work up a choice travel itinerary of things to do in the Southwark area of the city. The challenge- it has to be achievable within the average time it takes a competitor to run the marathon; 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Cultural

First up on our itinerary was the Tower of London which is literally on your doorstep, and certainly worth the short 5-minute walk to one of London’s most famous and historical icons. I’d also recommend the 15-minute walk to the Gherkin (30 St Mary Axe), 180 metres (591 ft) tall it offers stunning views across London.

Work Up an Appetite

For those who have running and style at heart there’s no place better than a visit to Nike 1948, just one and a half miles from The Tower it is one of six NikeLabs across the world, and a shrine to Nike’s rarest inventions and releases. The walk is short, but should ensure you work up an appetite for what’s to come next.

And Relax

Housed in its namesake; Butler’s Wharf- an English historic building on the south bank of the River Thames, we ate at The Butler’s Wharf Chop House. The British restaurant near London Bridge delivers a mean Sunday Lunch, a perfect venue to refuel after a tough day exploring the city.

To cap off your day, we recommend celebrating with a drink at The Tower’s Xi Bar & Lounge which offers a wide selection of beers, wines and cocktails, and a stunning backdrop of Tower Bridge and the River Thames.

We’d like to thank The Tower for their hospitality during our recent stay; a thoroughly comfortable room and sleep, friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere made it the perfect base for exploring London.
