Ape to Android Pay

As someone who travels a lot, it quickly becomes apparent that convenience is key- be it an easy to wheel cabin sized suitcase, an airline e-boarding card app or an electronic passport. These ‘methods of convenience’ are happening with money too, the need for a physical wallet is becoming less. The reason being; smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge evolving so quickly in the mobile phone market, have encouraged the rise of phone-related payment methods, and specifically the development of Android Pay technology.

Simply choose your smartphone, add your Mastercard and you’re good to make contactless payments on the go. Whether you are at the shops or in an app using Android Pay is easy. It almost negates the need for a traditional wallet and handing over your Mastercard- simply wake up your phone, place it near a contactless terminal and pay. You don’t even need to open an app.

For those concerned with safety, Android Pay doesn’t send your actual Mastercard card number with your payment. Instead it uses a virtual account number to represent your account information, so your card details stay safe. You can also keep track of your purchases to make sure you’re not overspending or use it to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. If your ever lose or have your phone stolen, you can use Android Device Manager to instantly lock your device from anywhere, secure it with a new password or even wipe it clean of your personal information.

Android Pay is accepted at millions of stores across the globe, and is available in popular Android apps. More merchants are added every day, and here for Ape to Gentleman I chose to trial Android Pay during my typical daily routine- a black coffee, no milk from Costa Coffee, a stop off at Boots to buy some Bumble and bumble Shampoo and Conditioner, and less routine; a new pair of headphones from KRCS the Apple reseller. Of course; paying at the till with my Mastercard was quick and painless via Android Pay- wake the phone, tap on a contactless terminal, leave. I can’t say I’ve instantly ditched my Gieves & Hawkes wallet, but it would be remiss to not say it feels like its’ days are numbered- being one less thing to carry.
