GQ’s 2010 Grooming Awards

Today Ape to Gentleman cast their eyes over the GQ’s Grooming Awards 2010 to see which brands and products have made it into the GQ’s esteemed selected few. The awards were judged by an illustrious panel of judges including Mankind’s own Paul Jameson and Jodie Harrison, GQ’s executive style and grooming editor. The results are pretty much as you would expect with market leaders Clinique, Lab Series and Biotherm Homme scooping up Best Range, Best Cleanser and Best Moisturiser (respectively) and Tom Ford winning yet another award to add to his no doubt vast collection, with his ‘Italian Cypress’ fragrance taking home the Best New fragrance award.

It pained me, however, to see that lack of actual male specific grooming brands among the winners. Granted, what works the best for your skin, works best for your skin, but I find it hard to imagine, with the vast multitude of male grooming brands out there (and even more emerging), that a winner for the Anti-ageing category for example, couldn’t have been picked from a male only brand. The likes of Giorgio Armani’s Skin Minerals, Zirh’s Platinum range and Dior Homme’s Dermo System were nowhere to be seen. An award for Best New/Emerging brand would also be a welcome addition.

Furthermore, Shaving is the one part of the male grooming process that men indulge in readily, and view as a necessity, yet there were the as many awards for shaving as there were for Fragances. Don’t get me wrong, fragrance plays a very important role in grooming process; they reflect personality, character, occasion and user preference. But at the end of the day, the only issue about fragrances, is the fragrance – essentially you spray it on, job done. Shaving however is an altogether much more complicated process; variety of razor type, brushes, shaving gel, foam (or oil), pre-shave, shaving accessories etc. Understandably they can’t possibly cover every category, but it would be good to see maybe an award for Best Cartridge Razor and Best Straight/Safety Razor instead of simply Best Razor, as well as a category for Best Pre-Shave, Best Shaving Treatment, so on and so forth. That said, all in all another great concept well executed by the guys at GQ.

    Hello,
In short, I agree with you. Dior Homme Dermo System is an outstanding range that I surprisingly find not too many guys use. Sadly, their detoxifying masque and serum have been discontinued. Also, new products in this range have not appeared for some time.
