As someone who started shaving almost a year ago to the day with a DE safety
razor I would recommend not buying a kit. The first item I would get is a
brush (a cheap one at that) and soap and implement that into your current
shaving routine.
You should invest into a book called "Leisureguy's
Guide to Gourmet Shaving" which you can find on amazon which goes
into great detail about razors, blade, soap, brush and everything else about
shaving with a DE razor.
My First razor (still my current one because I love it) is the Merkur
"Heavy Classic" Double-Edged Safety Razor. I chose it
because it’s simple, heavy and easy to grasp, you might need a slightly different
one depending on how big your hands are.
Since blade usefulness differs between person (I use a brand called
shark) you want to purchase a razor blade variety pack (this is THE MOST
IMPORTANT ITEM TO BUY). You will need to learn how to shave and
after you get the basics down start to test different blades till you find the
one that works for you. This is explained in detail from the gourmet
shaving book. Try to buy the biggest variety pack you can find because
the more blades you try the better chance you find one that works for you.
Amazon has a good selection of stuff that is usally cheaper then the specility stores. I purchaed a good amount of stuff from http://www.classicshaving.com which has a VERY GOOD SELECTION.
Just so you now my daily routine included the razor and a blade, the brush and soap and some times an alum block…. everything but the alum block is what you need to get started.
