Colgate ProClinical A1500 Electric Toothbrush Review

I am an old fashioned person.  I like tradition and the ways of tradition and that also applies to male grooming for me.  This is surprising for those who know me, as I am a gadget lover, but some areas of my life just don’t include gadgets, this is a strong belief of mine.

For one, I like a wet shave.  It can not be beaten and while a more expensive electric razor can give you a reasonable shave without all of the fuss, it just will not cut it for me.  I like the fuss and I like the result and feel of a wet shave too much to give up tradition.

From Traditional to Electric

So, when it comes to my teeth, can you guess how I feel.  I have never liked electric toothbrushes.  I have tried a couple of well known brands and yes they do a job but I always feel like I have had to brush twice as long to gets close to the freshness of a traditional toothbrush and I worry that after forty years and no fillings, turning to an electric toothbrush now may ruin it all after my previous experiences.  I even remember some time ago that there was a news report following a study in to whether electric was better than traditional toothbrushes and the result was that most people are fooling themselves if they think that is the case.

That was a while ago (years not months) and so when I was asked to test out the new Colgate ProClinical A1500 I thought, with some skepticism, that this would be interesting.

The Test

I brushed for three days using my traditional toothbrush to note the results of how I felt (if you are like me you probably normally just take it for granted).  One thing I noted was that I am not a particularly light brusher and I use a medium to firm brush (depending on which my wife buys for me).  So I suddenly knew this would be hard to beat. Then, I tested the Colgate ProClinical A1500 for one week…

After letting the Colgate do most of the work, I was pleasantly surprised that following brushing, my mouth tasted fresh and my teeth clean.  After one particular evening of a pretty heavy meal, I think the effort I would have normally used would have been pretty severe but the Colgate just did it’s job.

And here is the interesting bit.  The Colgate ProClinical A1500 is not really like any electric toothbrush I have ever tried in the distant past or any I can find on the market at the moment.  In fact, I am now not too sure traditional brushing will be as efficient.  The Colgate ProClinical A1500 actually auto adjusts itself in Auto Mode across Slower, Mid and Faster speeds which is pretty neat as your teeth get a full brush while your tougher gum lines and molars along with the gaps between your teeth all get healthy attention with only a slight adjustment of how you hold the toothbrush (to the front of your tooth line, at 45% (with a glowing notice light to show using correctly from a smart LED display) and over your teeth for the faster speed).

And where the Colgate ProClinical A1500 really did score with me was that if I wanted, I could turn to pure Optimum Mode (Mid-speed) or Deep Clean Mode (Faster) to get the job done.  For someone skeptical like me and who normally brushes hard with a traditional toothbrush, that gives a comfort that other electric brushes just can’t give.

The brush is pretty light.  It is ergonomically good and you do not fight the brush to hold it, and overall, you quickly find yourself being efficient with the brush (when in reality it is being efficient for you). A neat and small charging cradle comes with the brush to charge the Colgate ProClinical A1500.  There is also a very neat travel case. There is a lot of box for the device when you receive it and that would be my only slight gripe when firms like Apple show that there is a better way to package products nowadays saving money and hopefully the environment.

Conclusion

And here it is.  In honesty, I am converted.  With less effort on my part after initially getting used to the Colgate ProClinical A1500, and I really am finding it hard to go back.  My teeth feel really clean after brushing and my mouth fresh.  Colgate claim that the ProClinical A1500 removes plaque more efficiently and given the results I have enjoyed I find myself  believing this but I guess my next visit to the Dentist will be the real test in this regard.

Overall, this is a very fine toothbrush and Colgate have finally converted me to the electric toothbrush and I need to tell you, that was not going to be easy.  Well done to Colgate.  I would really recommend the Colgate ProClinical A1500 to converts of the electric toothbrush and skeptics alike.
