I saw so many punch-perm-sporting yakuza in the late '80s and even into the early '90s in Kyushu, especially in Beppu, which swarmed with yatchan who preyed on the (then) thriving tourism industry there, but also in Oita and Kumamoto. Even my wife's cousin, who worked for a shady debt collector, had an impressive one for a while there. It's kind of sad to read that the punch perm is on its way out. I wonder how the yakuza are wearing their hair nowadays? Ah, yes.
