An essential guide to 7 common skin care myths
1. Hair grows in thicker after shaving
After shaving it can often feel like hair has grown in thicker or darker. The reason for this is that when you shave you remove the tapered tip of the hair follicle. As the hair grows back, a thicker, coarser part of the follicle is revealed reinforcing the persistent myth that shaving causes darker, thicker hair growth. As the hair grows out again, it will begin to feel the same way it did before you shaved.

2. Tanning is good for your skin because it reduces acne
Getting a tan in the summer may temporarily improve the appearance of acne, but it’s also highly likely to leave nasty scars. It’s possible that tanning will cover up the redness caused by acne and cause blemishes to appear less noticeable as a result but this really is a temporary fix and won’t last any longer than your tan does. Consider the long term effects that too much sun exposure can have on your skin – wrinkles, scars, and maybe even skin cancer!

3. You are safe from skin damage as long as you are not in direct sunlight
UVA and UVB rays can penetrate clouds, so even if the day is overcast or cool you are still definitely at risk of getting burned. Just because you can’t feel the sun’s rays warming your skin, does not mean the potential for damage isn’t lurking nearby.

4. Regular old bar soap is fine to use on your face
The vast majority of bar soaps are not formulated for use on the face (some are however, and those are not the ones we’re referring to here!) Most soap is formulated for use on the tougher skin of our bodies. Think about the skin on your legs for example – it’s tougher than the skin on your baby soft cheeks, isn’t it? So don’t use the same cleanser for both! Instead, look for facial cleansers and scrubs that suit your skin type.

5. I’m a man, so I don’t need to moisturise
Men’s skin is exposed to the same elements as women’s. Wind, sun, cold temperatures, and dry air are all environmental elements that can wreak havoc on your skin – no matter your gender! Moisturisers can help repair and prevent future damage. Worried she may see you as less “manly” because you moisturise? Given the choice we’re fairly certain she’d rather snuggle up next to the man with smooth skin than the one who feels like a pineapple. Just saying.
6. People with Oily Skin Don’t need moisturiser
Skin produces oil when it feels dried out. Moisturisers keep skin hydrated by sealing in water, not oil. By giving your skin the hydration it needs in the form of a moisturiser, it will not need to produce as much oil to compensate. We’re not saying you should go out and slather a thick moisturising cream all over your face, but a lightweight moisturiser would certainly be appropriate. Moisturising will also help keep your skin looking young and healthy. Moisturisers containing tea tree, citrus ingredients, or alcohol will refresh while locking in hydration. For bonus points, choose one with SPF protection. Double whammy.
7. Chocolate Makes You Break Out
This one is certainly persistent, but there is absolutely no proof that it’s true. Acne is caused by skin cells clumping together and clogging pores. There is no research to suggest that chocolate causes excess oil production. So, until proven otherwise, we’re categorising this one as an old wives tale. That said – eating well is good for overall health (including skin!) but a candy bar or two every once in a while will not have a noticeable effect on skin health.
