The eighties were a purple patch for cult movies and none more so the Back to the Future trilogy. Back to the Future II made Marty McFly a teen icon, there was no item coveted more than the Hoverboard. Talented French artist Nils Guadagnin has managed to create a replica of the Hoverboard from Back to the Future II. According to Nils, here’s how he did it:

The Hoverboard is a project born in 2008 for an exhibition named “Back To the future”. This work is a copy of the hoverboard from the movie Back to the Future II. Integrated into the board and the plinth is an electromagnetic system which levitates the board. A laser system stabilises the object in the air. In the making of this work, I was thinking about different ways of presenting sculpture. In fact it’s a reflexion on the multiple possibilities of how to give a sculpture full spatial autonomy

While the Hoverboard could well be the ‘thing’ that dreams are made of, from watching the video it’s unclear if this Hoverboard can handle the weight of a human being. We could be wrong and they’ll go into production next year along with Marty’s futuristic Nikes. Ape or Gentleman, you can’t help but feel nostalgia when you see works such as this one.
