In numerical order of supremacy, this list, compiled from customer feedback, popularity, innovation, ingredients, results, price and Ape to Gentleman’s testers displays the Top 10 After Shave Balms the men’sgrooming world has to offer.

A good after shave balm should have many attributes, be able to rejuvenate skin, soothe, protect, relieve redness and irritation. Not only that, a good after shave balm should leave skin thoroughly hydrated. We expect a lot you say? Indeed, yes. And why not? Ape to Gentleman brings you their Top 10 after shave balms, don’t settle for anything less.

1. Geo F Trumper Skin Food 200ml £22.00 / 100ml £15.00 / 500ml £38.00
Achieving the number one spot in any of Ape to Gentleman’s Top 10 lists is no mean feat, especially when you consider we test… everything! Geo F Trumper Skin Food (link to review) stormed top spot, it wasn’t a tough decision. I want to say it’s a lotion but in reality it’s slightly thicker – the perfect consistency for an aftershave balm. It can be used pre or post shave (ideally underneath Trumpers Shaving Cream) for an amazingly protective shave and after for the ultimate soothing and hydrating effects. Our favourite is the Coral version but it’s also available in Extract of West Indian Limes and Sandalwood. Buy it now, you won’t be disappointed!

2. The Art of Shaving After Shave Balm Unscented 125ml $38.00
An extremely gentle, rich yet easily absorbed after-shave balm with lashings of quality ingredients. A real stand-out product for soothing freshly shaven, sensitive skin. A fairly hefty price but as always, you get what you pay for.

3. Anthony Logistics After Shave Balm 70g £19.50
Everyone at Ape to Gentleman is a big fan of Anthony products and for good reason; their products are ingredient rich and get the job done. The Anthony After Shave Balm is no different with a plethora of decent ingredients, a more than reasonable price to value ratio, it just gets the job done – leaving your shaven skin pleasantly cooled and soothed.

4. Gillette Series Energising Moisturiser 50ml £7.99
Our list wouldn’t be complete without an offering from shaving goliath Gillette. Obviously at £7.99 it scores highly on the pricepoint stakes but additionally, Gillette put plenty of money into research and development to develop a really good product rich in vitamins and moisturisers, perfect for keeping shaven skin hydrated and soothed. Despite having Moisturiser in the title, this product is aimed and delivers as an after shave balm too.

5. Zirh Soothe – Post Shave Healer 100ml £24.50/$32.50
We like Zirh Soothe because it’s light yet effective. The interesting formula containing exotic ingredients such as Irish Moss Extract do a great job at calming redness and other shaving irritation. It’s light enough to use as a facial moisturiser too.

6. Baxter of California After Shave Balm 120ml £18.00
Baxter perhaps don’t have the marketing budget of some of the bigger brands but they certainly know their skin care. Their award winning After Shave Balm with Tea Tree Oil and Menthol helps heal and cool, while Glycerin and Aloe focus on maintaing hydration and calming.

7. Korres Marigold & Ginseng Aftershave Balm 150ml £13.00
Another light after shave balm packing a heavy punch. Korres, Natural Products have created a fine after shave balm without the need for any chemical nasties. Old school ingredients such as Witch Hazel and Aloe provide antiseptic and soothing properties while Ginseng Extract cleverly enables the delivery of water and nutrients to the skin, improving its quality and firmness.

8. Kiehl’s Ultimate Men’s After Shave Moisturizer 125ml £17.00
Kiehl’s is a brand born out of an ancient Manhattan pharmacy and to grow to the size it is today (discounting it’s current owners wealth, L’Oreal) you know it must have and is producing fine products. There’s no surprise we see time honoured favourite ingredients such as Avocado Oil, Cocoa Butter and Vitamin E. This rich cream leaves shaven skin soothed and moisturised. It’s not quite the ‘Ultimate’ but it’s pretty good.

9. Clinique Skin Supplies for Men Post Shave Healer 75ml £16.50
Clinqiue for Men, one of the most active marketing players in the men’s skin care market. Unfortunately for them this means nothing to us but fortunately for them, we like their Post Shave Healer and so do you. Housed in stylish packaging, this light lotion delivers a good amount of post-shave relief. As always, Clinique products are unscented to avoid irritation.

10. Dermalogica Post-Shave Balm 50ml £23.80
A wallet devastating £23.80 for 50ml, we don’t like this! However, Ape to Gentleman’s Top 10’s are not solely about price. The balm is cooling and moisturising, good for calming irritation. We found the Sacyllic Acid in the balm to be slightly irritating for sensitive shaven areas. For those who suffer with ingrown hairs it’s useful and the absence of artificial fragrance or colour is a blessing. More suited toward oily skin shavers.
