Its practical characteristics are strong, too- wooden toggles and rope loops keep the torso protected form the harshest weather, while the thick woolen cloth creates a natural water repellant texture. Perfect for tackling the cooler climes throughout the winter months.

Oliver Spencer

Despite being founded fairly recently in 2002, Oliver Spencer has quickly become a staple British brand, and their Duffle Coat Melford Midnight (£395) shows why. Keeping it very classic with four rope toggles, the coat is made from Melford cloth – a material which is predominantly wool, but with the addition of polyamide to give the fabric resilience against the elements and increase durability.

Gloverall

The original, Gloverall supplied to the British Royal Navy, and Field Marshal Lord Montgomery himself a famous wearer of the coat in World War II. After the war, the coats became available as government surplus stock and became popular, especially with students. The Classic Duffle Coat is £399 and available in a variety of colours.

Moncler

A classic Italian outerwear brand founded in 1952, it’s safe to say Moncler know a thing or two about making quality coats. The price of their Villars Jacket (£1795) is enough to put most off, but nevertheless, it still serves as a great example of how to style a duffle coat for the modern age. Teaming the shape of the duffle with the features of sportswear, it’s just about the best that money can buy in terms of style and performance.
