Movember 2013

Love or loathe wearing a moustache, the month of November begins again soon – or as many of us know it better… Movember. Some sport moustaches year-round, others who choose not to or have follicular inabilities attempt to grow facial hair of sorts. It’s all good fun, but in particular, supporting the cause is vital for raising funds and awareness of men’s health issues – most notably prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.

The rules are quite specific, but essentially a Gentleman must shave his face at the start of November, then cultivate his moustache throughout the month. A number of fashion and grooming brands are supporting the cause, and include: ElevenParis, Becksondergaard, Links of London and TOMS. And from grooming, Kent Brushes has created a limited edition Moustache Comb (£4.50) and Penhaligon’s, a moustache wax (£5) – both of which will give £2 per sale to Movember charity. Finally, Gillette who are a Major Partner of Movember this year, helping raise £100,000 from sales of their products in Movember.

Movember started in 2003, raising a modest amount – and in 2012, over £92,000,000 was raised. Let’s try and make 2013 the biggest yet, and help reduce some of the figures below. The programme areas Movember focus on are awareness and education, living with and beyond cancer, staying mentally healthy and research.

  • 1 in 8 UK men with get prostate cancer.
  • A man will die from prostate cancer every hour in the UK.
  • 2,209 men in the UK were diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2009.
