Global-affairs magazine Monocle have recently launched their third collaboration fragrance with Commes des Garçons; Scent Three: Sugi. This addition was long awaited following Monocle’s worldwide success in 2008 with their debut Scent One: Hinoki and in 2009 with Scent Two: Laurel. The fragrance has launched in all five Monocle Shops, plus in London’s Dover Street Market and Tokyo.
This light, sophisticated and refreshing fragrance was created by Antoine Maisondieu, head perfumer of Comme des Garçons in Paris, and was inspired by the sugi; a popular ornamental Japanese plant, also known as Japanese Cedar.
Sugi falls effortlessly beside Monocle’s other scents Hinoki and Laurel, however brings a new dimension to the fragrance range with an added fresh and delicate appeal. This energising unisex fragrance has top notes of Mediterranean cypress and Madagascan pepper, followed by cedar from Virginia, iris from Florence and topped off with pine and Haitian vetiver.
Sugi comes packaged in a bold yet sophisticated yellow box created by Monocle’s creative director Richard Spencer Powell and his design team in London to mirror the refined values of both Comme des Garçons and Monocle. The scent’s matte-glass 50ml bottle in the same yellow colour features Monocle’s recognisable design and font.
