Long gone is the summer, grey skies have eaten the sun and autumn is firmly upon us. But there’s no need to lament the changing of the seasons, bespoke travel gurus Black Tomato have unveiled their essential autumn destinations where you can reacquaint yourself with the sun. Spanning the globe, the destinations include some rather inspiring adventures and of course, lots of the sunny stuff.

Introducing our hot autumn pick, Costa Rica. Choose the path less travelled and find yourself in the midst of intrepid jungle, zip-wiring over the glorious canopy, or hiking around Arenal Volcano. Alternatively tip-toe across the soft sands of the beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park and top up on that depleted Vitamin D. Get lured into the dense forest that backs the beach by the call of the wildlife within, meet three-toed sloths, anteaters, and if you’re lucky an elusive puma or jaguar.

Speaking of beaches, disappear into the secret sun-dripped island beaches of the Philippines. The Pamalican island, part of the Cuyo group in the western Philippines is only reachable by private aircraft. Get castaway and enjoy the tranquillity of this secluded island; cruise, windsurf and scuba-dive along the coral reef.

Alternatively, partake in a spot of island hopping, head south to Bohol, home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site housing over 1200 cone shaped hills known as the ‘chocolate hills’, they look good enough to eat.

For sunnier climes with a dash of the wild, there are few places quite like South Africa with its rugged coastlines and awe-inspiring wildlife. Take a helicopter tour over colourful Cape Town or explore the intricate underground Cango Caves, and take the plunge with wild crocodiles (from a protected cage, of course).

Finally, Black Tomato recommends a journey into the heart of northern Thailand to the Golden Triangle during this autumnal time of year. Avoid the crowds of the peak season months and uncover more than 370,000 square miles of spectacular mountain scenery and dense tropical forest.  Spend the day with the monks of the Wat Tham Paa Archatong monastery on an adventurous pony trek through the jungle terrain. End the adventure atop the Doi Mae Salong mountain with a steamy, speciality cup of Oolong tea in hand.
