Getting steep with The North Face

For Autumn/Winter 2017, The North Face have introduced their Steep Series Collection.

A standout feature is the addition of Fuseform, a technology that uses a weaving process to blend thicker, more-durable threads with lighter, lower-density fibers in high-wear zones, reducing overall weight. This combines with Gore-Tex to create a never-before used laminate on engineered woven materials in a first for both brands.

Another new feature seen in the collection is the ergonomic fit, made to support movement during activities such as hiking or climbing, perfected following athlete feedback from previous seasons. Other points of note include integrated pocket systems between layers, the helmet compatible hood, the collar radio pocket and the check pocket radio with loop.

“Our design teams took a lot of inspiration from astronauts heading into space – like our athletes, they are heading into the unknown, into harsh, extreme environments; needing kit that is going to protect and help them perform at their optimum no matter what is thrown at them.” – Darren Cookson, The North Face Product VP

The release of the collection comes alongside the launch of Ushba, a new film featuring 2017 Freeride Champion Léo Slemett alongside other members of The North Face snowsports team, Sam Anthamatten and Markus Eder. The film sees the trio attempt to complete the first ski descent of the Ushba mountain in Svaneti, Georgia.

The landscape of the mountain provided the ideal location to put the new collection through its paces, with a wide variety of terrain and types of skiing – from steep skiing to freestyle and pillow-lines.

“From Japanese deep powder in January to steep May lines in the Alps, the Steep Series kit is perfect for the whole season. What impresses me most is the quality of the stretch fabric: it is still elastic and waterproof at the end of the season after months and months of adventures.” – Léo Slemett, Freeride World Champion
