By now, I trust you’re well aware of the benefits of correct oral care – something we’ve all had instilled in us since childhood. The connection between oral health and overall health is a close one – your mouth, full of bacteria can be easily controlled by the body’s immune system, twice-daily brushing and flossing. It’s worth reinforcing now, that you should change your toothbrush every 3-4 months, and have dentist check-ups every 6-12 months.

To prevent dental issues, we must follow correct oral hygiene to prevent the build up of plaque – which is a soft white deposit which forms on teeth, made up of a mixture of; food, saliva and bacteria. If not regular removed (by brushing) it can cause tooth decay. Similarly with gum disease, but which can be avoided by regularly flossing away plaque – which can prevent a tartar build up too. It’s a good idea to avoid sugary drinks – which contain protective-enamel destroying acids. If you can’t avoid these, it helps to brush your teeth either just before eating, or an hour after.

Choose a toothbrush with medium-soft bristles, and apply a moderate amount of pressure. You may prefer an electric toothbrush, which may have a pressure monitor and a 2 minute counter for a complete brushing cycle. Mouthwash is useful, as an in intermediary solution, when brushing is not possible – but it’s best used before brushing to wash away any food, then followed up with a 2 minute brush, spitting the residue out but not rinsing with water – as this can wash away valuable fluoride (also found in mineral water), which is vital for strengthening tooth enamel.
