6 Layering Pieces You Need In Your Autumn 2022 Wardrobe

Nobody likes bidding farewell to summer, but there’s plenty to be excited about as the leaves begin to fall. For one, layering is a thing again, which means wardrobe options increase massively, and you can get more creative with your personal style. Warm weather is nice and all, but so is being able to wear heavyweight knitwear and a long coat. Every cloud (of which there will be many).

One of our favourite brands when it comes to layering up is Percival. The London-based label makes contemporary casualwear that manages to be both understated and characterful. It’s everyday wear with personality and class in equal measure, and there’s no shortage of stackable, textured pieces to help get your autumn wardrobe dialled in.

So, what are those pieces and why do you need them in your 2022 layering lineup? Below you’ll find Ape’s pick of the key garments for layering this season, all of which can be found in Percival’s new AW22 collection. From wool coats to knitwear, here’s what to invest in.

Mac Coat

The transitional months are notoriously wet, making a waterproof coat an essential purchase. Unfortunately, today’s teched-out Gore-Tex shell jackets, while highly practical, don’t tend to gel particularly well with everyday casual pieces. They can look overly outdoorsy and awkward when teamed up with things like jeans, casual shoes and knitwear, which is where a mac comes in handy.

Percival’s Waterproof Sherlock coat is a classic button-up mac, made in England using a weatherproof, Italian, cotton-blend fabric. It’s cut long (but not too long) in the body, which makes it perfect for layering over a crew neck, hoodie or some knitwear, and even features a gargantuan internal pocket that’s big enough to carry a small laptop or a tablet.

Heavyweight Overshirt

A good overshirt might just be the most versatile garment there is. It can be dressed up or down with ease, it works in all sorts of temperatures thanks to its endless layering potential, and if you pick one in a heavyweight fabric, it’ll serve you well even in the darkest depths of autumn and winter.

The thing that first brought Percival to our attention was the quality of the overshirts on offer. It’s no secret that we’re partial to a shacket, and the British brand just happens to make some of the best in the business.

Take the Blanket Workshirt in Casentino Wool, for example. Cut from a custom Italian wool-blend fabric, it features pockets aplenty and comes in a wide range of seasonally-appropriate colourways and checks. It’s made in London too, and at just over £200, we think it’s phenomenal value for money.

Ribbed Knit

Knitwear is the perfect vehicle for introducing some texture into your autumnal looks, particularly when it’s ribbed for extra pleasure. Layer it up with other tactile pieces to bring some depth to your fall/winter outfits, or simply rock it over a T-shirt when you’re lounging around the house.

Percival’s Raglan Knit is built for layering, with an insulating lambswool construction that’s designed to keep you cosy. Stack it with an overshirt and a long coat to fight off the worst of the autumn weather in style.

Brushed Cotton Shirt

The flannel shirt has long been an autumn go-to, with its lumberjack-esque checks offering an easy way to inject some colour and interest to your look. And while we’re still fans of the classic workwear look, sometimes the best course is to keep it understated and simple. Enter, Percival’s Brushed Cotton Shirt.

Crafted from the finest cotton and brushed (duh) for comfort, it’s cosy, easy to layer with and comes in three plain colourways, each one as versatile as the last. Wear yours open over a tee or buttoned up beneath a mid layer and some heavy outerwear.

Wool Overcoat

A proper overcoat is one of those classic pieces that’ll last you a lifetime and go with everything… provided you buy the right one. Sling it on over casual looks to elevate them, or use it to protect your finery from Mother Nature when the time comes to get dressed up.

We’re big fans of Percival’s Trench Coat, which ticks all of our standard overcoat boxes and then some. Soft wool-blend fabric? Check. Timeless design? Check. Reassuringly thick? Check. Goes with anything and everything? Check and check.

Roll Neck

The roll neck is right up there in the god tier of layering pieces. The raised neck pops out from the neckline of shirts, jackets and coats, adding another dimension to autumn and winter looks that a standard crew neck or cardigan simply can’t deliver. Also, it makes you look a little bit like a Scandinavian architect, which, let’s face it, is as good an aesthetic as any to lean into.

This navy option from Percival is cut in a comfortable but flattering fit and made from 100% lambswool to really keep that neck and torso nice and warm. We’d suggest layering it with a textured overshirt, and throwing on a long coat to complete the look. Oh, and trousers. Don’t forget the trousers.
