Sunscreen, generally available is a lotion, spray or gel and designed to reflect sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation to fend off sunburn- a holidaymakers worst and most common ailment. There are two types of sunscreen; physical sunscreens designed to reflect sunlight or chemical sunscreens designed to absorb the harmful UV light. Besides the obvious burning of the skin, resulting in red, blistered and eventually peeling skin- sunscreen can help with the prevention of skin cancer. Some sunscreens do not block UVA radiation, which does not primarily cause sunburn but can increase the rate of melanoma and photo-dermatitis. Broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreens will fend off UVA radiation. Other concerns avoided by sunscreen include premature ageing and sagging skin.
Sun screen, sunblock, suntan lotion, sunburn cream, sun cream, block out- there are many names but all are commonly ‘rated’ on their SPF or Sun Protection Factor. For example, an ‘SPF 15’ sunscreen will allow 1/15th of burning sun radiation to reach the skin. To calculate how long an SPF allows you to be in the sun for; firstly, you can be in sun for 15 minutes without sunscreen, before burning. Take the SPF number x 15. An example; SPF 30 would allow 450 minutes in the sun (7.5 hours). Remember though, if you swim and or heavily sweat, then ensure you either reapply or choose a water resistant sunscreen. We believe a minimum of SPF 30 for adults and 50 for children is best. Here are Ape’s Three of The Best: Sunscreen in price order.
Perhaps the most familiar brand here, for most of you gentlemen- P20 by Riemann is made with an alcohol-based, highly water resistant formula, containing UVA and UVB filters. The pièce de résistance; it provides broad spectrum sun protection for up to 10 hours and is transparent, translating to once a day application.
We like the SPF 30 continuous spray which has a five star UVA rating, protecting against the premature signs of ageing. There are no added fragrance, colourants or preservatives- and it’s gentle on sensitive skin but perhaps is more of a pure sunscreen versus made with skin benefiting properties like the two below, too.
Founded in 2010 Sun Bum create high quality products but with some serious life-style, designed for those, “who live and love in the sun”. A small company based in Cocoa Beach, Florida- all Sun Bum sunscreens are tested, approved and recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation (of America), passing their strict standards.
Our favourite is the water-resistant Sun Bum SPF 30 Original Sunscreen Lotion (237ml) with its moisturising formula designed to protect your skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays. It’s enriched with Vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps to neutralise free radicals, which are the main cause of premature skin ageing.
Hampton Sun is probably the most stylish sunscreen on the planet- inspired by the travels of two New Yorkers to the Hamptons and St. Barts, their focus is on finest ingredients, silky formulas, advanced technology, the chicest packaging, and the highest protection with skincare benefits.
We like the Hampton Sun SPF 35 Continuous Mist (148ml)- made with Polycrylene to increase water resistance and filter more UVA rays than the average sunscreen. It also includes aloe vera and a multi-vitamin complex to nourish and hydrate skin while the UVA/UVB broad spectrum sunscreens protect. The light, silky formula is absorbed instantly with no sticky film and has a hint of Hampton Sun’s signature Privet Bloom scent- which smells like a luxury holiday.
