Last week I reviewed the Braun Series 3 390cc electric razor, this week it’s the turn of the wet shaver, the Gillette Fusion Power Gamer. For those of you who read my Braun Series 3 review you’ll know I prefer to keep stubble than shave regularly. The stubble is kept for two reasons, firstly, I like the way it looks and secondly(most importantly) I get shaving rash and irritation. After taking the plunge and removing the stubble last week with the Braun Series 3(and being pleased with the results) it was time to give Gillette’s latest shaving marvel a go.
After the arrival and unwrapping of the Gillette package I was presented with the Gillette Fusion Power Gamer and a bottle of Gillette Fusion Hydra Gel for sensitive skin – perfect! I’ve always been a fan of Gillette razors, my current weapon of choice is the Gillette Mach 3. As aforementioned, I’m not a regular wet shaver so have never felt the need to upgrade. My first thoughts were captured by arguably insignificant things, I pay close attention to these kind of details. The first thing was the presence of a battery, presumably for the Fusion Power, it wasn’t just any battery but a Duracell. Insignificant you say? Maybe, but it’s a good sign of things to come in my book, surely the best razor on the planet should be serviced by the best battery on the planet? Secondly and this is one of my pet hates – opening the plastic packaging was a delight, instead of those finger shredding sealed types it was an easy to open, albeit secure, perforated backing. Final thoughts were of the razor itself, after slotting the Duracell securely into the base of the razor, the gloss white and metallic grey handle looked and felt great in my hand, a really solid and stylish feel. The blade itself was gleaming with 5, yes 5, sparkling blades at the front and a solitary blade termed ‘Precision Trimmer blade’ on the back for shaving those hard to reach areas such as below the nose.
After preparing appropriately by showering and scrubbing my week-old stubble with a face scrub I applied the Gillette Fusion Gel to my chin and neck. The Gel is a cooling-looking blue affair which lathered up nicely and soon became a cooling-feeling gel, which I liked. I would like to just point out that you don’t need much, a little goes a long way.
I fired up the Fusion Power with a click of the small orange button on the handle(which also has a nice little ‘low battery’ indicator and an auto-shut off after 8 minutes feature). If you’ve ever used an electric toothbrush before then I’ll liken the feeling to that. I then proceeded to glide through my stubble with consummate ease, allowing the “soothing micro-pulses” to work their magic… and work their magic they did! I don’t work for Gillette, obviously… but believe me when I say this, their latest creation, this razor, is absolutely stunning! My normally sensitive skin was barley touched or irritated and my stubble was removed in one stroke(instead of the usual 3)… clearly due to the “5-blade Shaving Surface”. I rounded off the shave with my After Shave Balm. Done and done! No irritation in sight.
I wanted to talk a little more about the “soothing micro-pulses” because in my opinion this is the Fusion Power’s pièce de résistance. Forgive me for this description but I feel as though it’s the best way to convey my thoughts… the Fusion Power’s “soothing micro-pulses” operate seemingly in the same way a hover-craft skims over water or a Flymo cuts grass. Gillette’s latest offering barley feels like it makes contact with the skin more the razor hovers over your face while the blades skillfully take the hair away. I now can’t imagine shaving without the “soothing micro-pulses”.
Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? It isn’t. Try it for yourself and see. For all Gillette’s might and advertising power, think Thierry Henry, Tiger Woods and Roger Federer I think most forget the simplest fact of them all… they are and have been doing since 1895 producing the world’s finest wet shavers. Years of research and development, know-how and experience translates into one fine wet shaver offering… the Gillette Fusion Power Gamer razor.
