Comme des Garcons Series 3 Incense candles

The modern gentleman has it harder than ever to switch off with the concept of ‘continuous contact’ realised in the guise of Smartphone’s, Wi-Fi and the Internet (ironic, I know). One way of helping yourself to relax is with a spot of aromatherapy. Cue Commes des Garcons

Comme des Garcons, among many things, are purveyors of exquisite scents. Their hard to find Series 3 fragrances are now available in a candle format. Fill your living space or office with the earthy calm of ethereal forests (Kyoto); dry and calm, the cedar note in Kyoto is evident, swirling with the earthy scents of spicy, smoky vetiver and the juniper-meets-evergreen aroma of cypress. Each candle is made in France and will give you over 50 hours of therapeutic relaxation.

Jaguar 75 iPhone/iPad App

The 23rd September 2010 marks the 75th anniversary of the illustrious Jaguar marque. To mark the occasion, a group of 75 individually-numbered, iconic Jaguars from spanning the 75 years will make a two-day journey from Coventry to Goodwood. This celebratory drive, starting in Coventry at 10.30am Today, will take in London’s May Fair hotel – site of the original Jaguar model launch in 1935 – and finish at the UK’s largest heritage motor festival, the Goodwood Revival tomorrow, Saturday 18th September.

Most cars will be privately-owned examples, driven by their owners, joined by some of the most famous cars from Jaguar’s own heritage collection, including the E-Type, C-Type, pre-war SS Jaguar saloons and a selection of its latest models.

To coincide with the drive, Jaguar have launched an iPhone and iPad app charting the 75 years of the British marque’s history, available to download now by searching ‘Jaguar 75’ in iTunes.

This ‘Jaguar 75’ app pulls together a host of materials that tell the company’s story of making beautiful fast cars over the past 75 years through the people and machines that have made it a British motoring icon – including the SS 2.5-litre Saloon, XK120, C-Type, D-Type, XKSS, MKII, E-Type, XJ13, XJ6, XJ-S, XJR-9, XJ220, XK8, XK,  XF and XJ.

One of Ape to Gentleman’s favourite random quotes from the App has to be this one…

Enzo Ferrari proclaimed the E-Type to be “the most beautiful car ever built” on first sight of it, while America’s Road & Track magazine reported it as, in the unreconstructed language of the era, “the greatest crumpet collector known to man.”

These two quotes typify the difference between US and Italian motoring tastes. Each to their own.

Philips SensoTouch 3D Electric Shaver

In recent times the shaving world has noticed a return to tradition with Safety-razor once again shaving coming to the fore. However this has not stopped the innovators doing what they do best. Market leaders in the Electric razor market for over 70 years, Philips have prided themselves on razor innovation.

Today we introduce you to their most advanced shave yet, the Philips SensoTouch 3D Electric shaver. The GyroFlex 3D system follows the contours of your face and shaves every hair in just a few strokes with its UltraTrack heads. GyroFlex 3D contour-following heads adjust to every curve, minimising pressure and irritation. The combination of three specialised tracks: slots for normal hair, channels for long or flat lying hair and holes for the shortest stubbles, gives a close shave that keeps skin irritation to a minimum while the dual blade system lifts hairs to cut comfortably below skin level. Finally use the skin friendly precision trimmer to refine your moustache and taper your sideburns to perfection.

Serge Lutens Bois de Violette

Bois de Violette is notoriously a difficult fragrance to describe. Where normally we tend to associate cedar with masculine scents and violet with the feminine, Bois de Violette throws the preverbial ‘curve ball’ to your sense of smell. Created by Chris Sheldrake and Serge Lutens in 1992, Bois de Violette brings out the woody-fruity character of the Feminite du Bois fragrance; the violet is said to intensify the rest of the fragrance creating a dark and mysterious woody, violet scent.

Available now exclusive to Liberty, 50ml EDP £100.

Antony Lister @ The Standard Shop New York

If you’re privileged enough to find yourself in New York this weekend add a sprinkling of culture Ape to Gentleman style. The Standard shop plays home to Australian artist Anthony Lister’s individual pieces of art. Mini-masks, shields and swords will be on sale at The Standard shop as well as specialist pieces on acrylic on wood signed and numbered by the artist (costing $200). Anthony Lister uses comic book imagery for his own means, redirecting popular culture for personal expression.

Heroes and villains are taken out of the panel and placed in a new space, devoid of the usual storyline, dialogue and scenery. His paintings are not controlled by cartoon context; rather, the figures in these portraits are reinvented through the artist’s hand. His mixed media technique, involving layers of ink, spray and brushwork, allows his paintings to simultaneously have a soft, ethereal and garish, raw energy.

To mark the event, Lister painted a site-specific piece on the glass window of the shop last Wednesday (September 15th). To see more Anthony Lister Artwork visit:
