Fornasetti Profumi

Fornasetti Profumi, an Italian fashion and room accessories brand famed for art-inspired scarves, ties, lamps, furniture, china plates and tables, have become a favourite of Ape to Gentleman, and in particular, for their candles.

Founded by Piero Fornasetti- a Milanese painter, sculptor, interior decorator and engraver of books, the ‘house’ today still designs at the Fornasetti Atelier in Milan with Fornasetti’s son, Barnaba at the helm.

Fornasetti wares which are more like pieces of art then purely product are hand-crafted by skilled craftsmen and women who use the same techniques that were deployed in the first Fornasetti designs back in the early 20th century. Colour is applied by hand for instance and the original paper patterns are still meticulously followed. This is all done in the name of quality.

Moving on to present day and the latest ‘Collaborazioni’ which sees Barnaba Fornasetti turn his attention towards home fragrance in combination with decorative objects. There are a variety of home scenting devices, of which- we opted for the ‘Sole di Capri’ scent in a candle.

The candle, a ceramic vessel with lid is decorated with a personified, smiling sunshine and distinctive panorama in marigold yellow and royal blue, inspired by Capri and Fornasetti family holidays in the 1960’s.

The potent aroma once lit is a citrusy affair with base notes of Cistus Labdanum, Iodine and Ambergris. A heart of Pine sap and Samphire. And top notes of Lemon, Bergamot, Mandarin and Galbanum. It conjures thoughts of high summer and days spent in the sun, some how capturing those Italian terracotta terraces and their sun-baked, heady dry scent mixed with sea air and the surrounding citrus trees growing among white-walled houses.

This is Capri in a candle, and a fine example of Piero Fornasetti’s legacy, representing art, high-quality porcelain finish and a superb candle, which smells as good lit as this piece of re-useable art will look in any gentleman’s home.
