To celebrate their 150th anniversary next year, IWC Schaffhausen have unveiled a special Jubilee collection, comprising of 27 limited-edition models from the Portugieser, Portofino, Pilot’s Watches and Da Vinci families.
IWC will also launch its first ever wristwatch featuring the original digital hours and minute display as it appeared on the brand’s Pallweber pocket watches back in 1884. The collection of timepieces all share their imprinted dial in white or blue, a look achieved through a process involving the application of several layers of lacquer.
“In a long and complex process, these dials are coated with up to 12 layers of high-quality lacquer, flat-polished, brushed and then imprinted several times.” – Christian Knoop, IWC Schaffhausen Creative Director
The watches with white dials have blue hands, while those with blue dials have rhodium-plated hands. The inspiration from this design came from the first Portugieser models, Reference IW325, from 1939. Every watch in the collection is fitted with a black alligator leather strap, and each model also bears the text “150 Years”, either as a medallion or as an engraving.
The American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded IWC in 1868, with the aim of combining Swiss craftsmanship with American manufacturing technology to create pocket watches.
“Our founder’s entrepreneurial spirit and his untiring quest for engineering excellence have left a lasting impression on IWC. Our Jubilee collection revisits icons from the history of IWC and unifies them to form a unique and impressive collection.” – Christoph Grainger-Herr, IWC Schaffhausen CEO
The IWC Tribute to Pallweber Edition “150 Years” is one of the collection’s standout watches, with an 18-carat red gold case, a white dial with a lacquered finish, white display discs, and a blued seconds hand. The watch is limited to 250 pieces.
Another of the collection’s most prominent pieces, the Portugieser Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition “150 Years”, has a power reserve of 96 hours and a single moon phase display that only needs to be adjusted by 1 day after 577.5 years. The collection is rounded off with models including the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Edition “150 Years”, the Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36 Edition “150 Years”, and the Da Vinci Automatic Edition “150 Years”.
