BMW i8

Summer 2014 appears to be when Germany has found the winning formula. A combination of speed and power with eye catching performance, combined with an unrivalled attention to detail. You may be forgiven for thinking I am referring the success of Messer’s Lowe, Lahn and Muller but with the introduction of the new i8, BMW have ensured the World Cup is not the only success that they will be having this year.

Dynamic, a lightweight design and efficiency, the hallmarks of all BMW’s, are partnered with the latest technology to create a truly hybrid supercar, capable of performance figures justifiable of this tag. Instantly recognisable, this new generation sports car combines a layering principle allowing aerodynamic forms to be wrapped up in a progressively styled package. From the front on the sporting ability of this car is obvious. Be it the large front spoiler, the broad kidney grille which extends over the sleek headlights or the sculptured wheel arches the width of this car ensures a road focused stance.

Internally the cockpit design is complimented by progressive elements which further highlight the sporting pedigree of this car. Horizontal lines and a layered finish echo the externals and create a powerful impression, further accentuated by the free standing 8.8-inch iDrive display.

Purposely designed as a plug-in-hybrid sports car offering agile performance, the near 50:50 weight distribution, exceptionally lightweight body and TwinPower Turbo come together to create an overall concept that represents a new landmark in BMW’s EfficientDynamics development strategy. Powered by a highly turbocharged 1.5 litre, three-cylinder petrol engine, the first of its kind by BMW develops up to 231hp. Working in harmony with the car’s secondary power source, a 131hp hybrid synchronous electric motor results in a 0-62mph time of 4.4 seconds going on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. While this is surely enough to keep even the make even the most hardened petrol head take note, this does not come at a detriment to the environment with CO2 Emission of only 49g/km.

With the launch of the BMW i portfolio consumers have access to a wide ranging innovative product, one that makes electric car ownership an easy and satisfying experience. This is further helped by a reduced charge time enabling an 80% battery recharge in less than 3 hours.

The aesthetics of this car, with the aggressive design and sleek lines ensure that this is certainly going to be a major hit and with industry leading technology the i8 is a car competitors shall have to take note of. The future of high end electric supercars is here.
