All-Season Style: 11 Pieces Of Clothing That Can Be Worn All Year Round
Newsflash: You don’t have to rebuild your entire wardrobe from the ground up every time the weather changes. Don’t get us wrong; it’s good to have certain pieces specifically for winter, summer and the transitional months, but plenty of core items aren’t utterly useless the second the temperature changes. There are some you can continue to get good use out of year-round.
These are the versatile staples, the layering heroes and the dependable all-rounders. They’re not the head-turners or the statement makers, but they’re the pieces that will keep your wardrobe afloat no matter the season.
These garments can be worn in many different ways with many different outfits, and if you’re looking to streamline your personal style, they should be the first things you pick up and the last things you let go.
From a good pair of jeans to lightweight knitwear, these are the items we would call ‘four season’ garments.
Mid-Weight Wool Tailoring
- Hackett Birdseye Suit in Loro Piana fabric
- Suitsupply Navy Perennial Tailored Fit Havana Suit
- Hawes and Curtis Navy Herringbone Wool Classic Fit Suit
- Charles Tyrwhitt Italian Luxury Suit
Not everyone has the budget or the inclination to have a wardrobe stocked with a variety of suits. Maybe you only wear tailoring once or twice a year. In this case, having more than one doesn’t make sense. And if you only need one, a mid-weight wool suit in navy or charcoal is the way to go.
Not too light, not too heavy, this type of suit will work equally well in the summer with a linen shirt as it will in the winter with a roll neck and an overcoat. It’s versatile and timeless if you choose the right cut —single-breasted, two-button, classic fit—and perfect for all seasons.
Derby Shoes
- Kleman Frodan
- Velasca Cervellee
- S.T. Valentin – Black Grained Leather Derby Shoes
- Church’s Shannon Full-Grain Leather Derby Shoes
You can’t have a suit without a nice pair of leather shoes, and Derbies are hard to beat. Less formal than an Oxford but dressier than a loafer, these classic dress shoes are perfect for weddings, work and even smart-casual settings if you buy right.
Traditionally, they feature a flat leather or rubber sole, but going for something with grippy lugs on the bottom instead ensures that they won’t lose their footing when the summer turns to autumn.
Merino Sweater
- Asket The Merino Sweater
- Velasca Follina
- ISTO Merino Wool Sweater
- Reiss Wessex Merino Wool Crew Neck Jumper
Merino is a wonder material that’s extremely effective at regulating body temperature. It’ll keep you cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold, all while wicking moisture away from the skin and preventing nasty odours.
Naturally, this makes it quite good for use in all four seasons. For maximum wearability, go for a crew-neck sweater in a versatile colour like navy, grey or green.
Knitted Polo
- wahts Graham Cotton Knitted Polo
- Wax London Turin – Light Khaki Ladder Stripe Knitted Cotton Polo
- Velasca Ostana
- Closed Polo Shirt
A classic pique polo shirt feels inherently summery – not the type of thing you’d wear in the fall or winter. However, change the material to fine-gauge wool or cotton while keeping the silhouette the same, and you’ll have something that feels at home all year round.
Slot it under a tailored jacket and a mac in the colder months, or wear it on its own tucked into a pair of tailored pants with loafers in the summer.
Chinos
- Velasca Asolo
- Frame Straight-Leg Cotton-Twill Chinos
- Asket The Regular Chino
- Everlane The Transit Chino
Outside of formal occasions or sports, try to think of a time when chinos wouldn’t work. You probably can’t do it, and that’s because they’re some of the most versatile legwear out there.
No matter the setting or season, a pair of chinos will have your back. For maximum versatility, go for a classic straight fit in navy and combine them with anything and everything in your wardrobe.
Mid-Weight Denim
- Asket The Slim Jeans
- ISTO Everyday Denim
- Stan Ray Wide 5 Jeans
- Drake’s Bleach Wash 14.2oz Japanese Selvedge Denim Five-Pocket Jeans
Jeans are seasonless. Period. You can wear them in summer, you can wear them in winter, and by God you can wear them during the months in between. But – and it is a big but – you have to buy the right ones.
Can you imagine trying to go about your daily business in mid-August sweating into a pair of 20oz raw denim? It doesn’t even bear thinking about. So, what you need is a happy medium. Something not too light, not too heavy – this is where mid-weight denim is perfect.
Buy something in a medium wash with a fabric weight of around 15oz. That way, you’ll be able to wear the same pair in comfort all year round.
Classic Cotton Tee
- David Gandy Wellwear Cotton Crew
- Asket The T-Shirt
- ISTO Classic T-Shirt
- Closed T-shirt made from Pure Organic Cotton
T-shirts don’t stop being useful when the sun retreats for winter. They live on as sartorial building blocks, layering foundations and undergarments. This is why it’s so important to find a style that works for you and stock up.
The key here is to make sure they fit well at the shoulders and are cut from good-quality cloth.
Chambray Shirt
- ISTO Chambray Shirt
- Velasca Citerna
- Closed Cotton Shirt
- Polo Ralph Lauren Button-Down Collar Cotton-Chambray Shirt
Known as denim’s lighter sibling, chambray is an incredibly versatile material. It’s ideal for giving outfits a touch of colour and visual texture, but it won’t leave you a hot mess when the mercury rises.
Try pairing a chambray shirt with off-white jeans, a green field jacket and brown suede loafers for a masterclass in transitional style and colour matching.
Worker Jacket
- ISTO Work Jacket
- Closed Worker Jacket
- Carhartt WIP Michigan Coat
- Drake’s Cotton-Canvas Chore Jacket
The worker jacket really does live up to its name. It’s one of the hardest-working garments out there. Come rain or shine, it’s just as at home layered under a mac as it is thrown nonchalantly over a crisp white T-shirt.
You can team it with sportswear, tailoring, casual staples – there’s nothing it won’t turn its hand to and no time of year it would rather stay indoors.
Go for a classic three-pocket style in a heavy cotton twill for a garment that will age with you and get better with each passing year.
Mac
- Asket The Car Coat
- ISTO Trench Coat
- Burberry Garbardine Cotton Coat
- Velasca Volpedo
If you’re anything like us, the rain is an ever-present fixture of daily life, regardless of whether it’s November or July. This is where a mac comes in handy. It’s oversized for easy layering, and it’ll stop the rain dead in its tracks.
Plus, thanks to its roomy cut, there’s enough space to layer up when the weather is bitter.
Liner Vest
- Closed Quilted Vest
- Carhartt WIP Lachlan Vest Liner
- Asket The Zip Vest
- Wax London Skye – Khaki Quilted Nylon Gilet
A liner vest might be our favourite layering piece. You can wear it on its own with a tee in warm weather or get fully wrapped up with some knitwear, a jacket and a big coat in the darkest depths of winter.
It instantly adds a little something to even the simplest outfits, and it’s thin enough not to add too much bulk when styled underneath other garments.
We like a classic quilted version with a round collar and zip front. Choose olive if you want something subtle or burnt orange to add a pop of colour to otherwise understated outfits.
