Hansen Garments: Timeless Classics With A Difference

There’s a lot to be said for small wardrobes and big personalities. Saying more with fewer clothes is a philosophy that every man should be getting behind and it’s something especially important to Nordic brand Hansen Garments. They believe in the importance of clever day-to-day dressing and feel every outfit should consist of classics with longevity in mind.

Stylish Beginnings

Founded in Copenhagen in 2010, Hansen Garments is the brainchild of Aase Hansen (designer and founding partner) and Per Chrois (CEO and founding partner). The duo’s backgrounds in design and fashion (Aase) and communication and film production (Per) have certainly fed into the brand’s ethos: creating investment pieces which are designed to last and will never date.

Their first store opened in Copenhagen in 2016 and as well as stocking the brand’s own collections, the store curates a selection of garments and accessories from other likeminded labels that share their values and vision.

In July 2021 they opened their second store located in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen.

Design And Craftsmanship

At the heart of Hansen’s collections is design and craftsmanship. When a brand releases itself from the shackles of trends and ‘fashion’, with an eye firmly on style and longevity, the results can be special. Hansen Garment’s silhouettes are rugged with nods to workwear and practical clothing from their Nordic backgrounds, but they’re also refined, with fine tailoring references.

The individual collections are an arrangement of colours and fabrics, yet each is connected to the one before and the one after. Contrast is essential, whether that be in light and darkness, rugged or refined. All garments are made in Europe using the finest fabrics, handpicked from mills in Japan and Italy. Production in Europe allows Hansen to ensure quality standards don’t slip.

Timeless Collections

The resulting garments certainly make an impression. High-quality staples like their Henning casual classic shirts, an everyday shirt made of lightweight Italian cotton twill which is uniquely soft and extremely comfortable to wear, sit alongside new season additions like the Chris blazer and matching Fred pants. Both blazer and trouser bring a contemporary silhouette to the the two-piece suit, using slub yarn for a thicker and more unique fabric surface.

Elsewhere there’s plenty of options for diverse year-round wardrobes. Darker, more rugged pieces in earthy tones for winter are complemented by lighter – in both tone and fabric – summertime pieces. Chunky knitted jumpers, overshirts, shirts… even a jumpsuit (Joakim) in army olive green that we’re just fascinated by.

Those looking for a new winter coat are also well catered for. There are long anoraks (Roald), long lined wool coats (Sigurd) and timeless technical parkas (Storm and Rune), monuments of design, style and practicality. This is Hansen Garments in a nutshell: each garment proving to be classic yet unique. There’s a playfulness to the designs but nothing takes away from the overarching aim of timeless clothing.

Ape Studio For Hansen Garments

It’s easy to get excited about a new clothing brand – based off highly polished campaign imagery, clever marketing spiel and a richly reported history. However, nothing can compare to a hands-on experience. And getting hands on with Hansen Garments is exactly what we did. We chose the following pieces and photographed our model, Ruel, putting them through their paces:

We’re happy to report that the level of design, construction quality and materials used are all first class. Hansen Garments come Ape approved.
