Audi Solar Roof

Announced today- German car giant Audi and Alta Devices, a subsidiary of Hanergy, have joined forces to integrate thin-film solar cells into panoramic glass roofs- to a.) extend the range of its electric vehicles and b.) for sustainability. The first prototype is to be built by the end of 2017, and before you ask- yes, they perform very well in low light; ideal for the UK.

“…a milestone along the way to achieving sustainable, emission-free mobility” – Audi Board of Management Member for Procurement Dr. Bernd Martens

The electricity generated will flow into the car’s electrical system and can supply for example the air-conditioning system or the seat heaters- a gain in efficiency that has a direct positive impact on the range of an electric vehicle. At a later stage, solar energy could directly charge the traction battery. More gusto for the electric car wave.
