OPUMO x L’Estrange Menswear Collection – “Less But Better” Inspired by Dieter Rams

During the 1970s, a designer by the name of Dieter Rams introduced the idea that a useless object has no place in design. It just so happens that the new OPUMO x L’Estrange collection agrees.

After a career of working for companies like Braun and Vitsœ, Rams had produced a portfolio of timeless products that were as useful as they were pretty. Many summarise Rams’ design ethos with the phrase: “less but better.” Rams, however, delved deeper into what made a design “good design”, compiling 10 principles by which all design should be measured, including the modern gent’s wardrobe.

Dieter Rams 10 principles of ‘good design’

  1. Good design is innovative.
  2. Good design makes a product useful.
  3. Good design is aesthetic.
  4. Good design makes a product understandable.
  5. Good design is unobtrusive.
  6. Good design is honest.
  7. Good design is long-lasting.
  8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail.
  9. Good design is environmentally friendly.
  10. Good design is as little design as possible.

Working in line with these principles, eCommerce platform and all-round design lovers OPUMO have collaborated with their friends at L’Estrange to produce a small capsule collection. The limited-edition range features three pieces from the L’Estrange wardrobe, which have been tweaked and updated.

This is L’Estrange’s best-selling trouser. Named The 24 Trouser because of its relevance for every occasion, these versatile pants are cut to a sharp, slim fit. The exclusive pair comes in a dark grey colourway and features a key-fastening loop and carabena.

Conclusion

L’Estrange’s approach to menswear has always been influenced by the small features that elevate men’s formalwear. By incorporating aspects like a back-pleat and split sides into a T-shirt, the piece takes on a new life. It’s clever design flair like this that sets the OPUMO x L’Estrange collection apart from the crowd. Each piece has been optimised to be the most stylish and useful that it can be. It’s the type of clothing we think Dieter Rams himself would wear.
