Grooming Trends – London Collections: Men
From precision tailored blazers, 90s rave wear and floral prints, the recent male fashion catwalks have given us a lot to be excited about come SS14 and it doesn’t stop there. The array of sleek hairstyles and bespoke facial hair types on show provided the perfect accessory to the latest trends, and thankfully we had both celebrity hairstylist Michael Douglas and celebrity stylist Andrew Davis on hand, to tell us on how to ‘wear’ these looks from top to bottom.
Andrew Davis says, ‘There was a more rugged Americana outdoor approach to style this season. Khaki lightweight coats with patch pockets were complimented by wind swept hair and a groomed beard. Outdoor pursuits will be where every fashion forward male heads next summer! To create this look use the Braun cruZer6 beard & head. It features a detachable trimming comb that offers four length settings taking all of the effort out of trying to maintain your beard or stubble. ‘To complete this look by prepping hair with a mousse before blow drying, then finish with a matt clay to give your style texture,’ says Michael Douglas.
Tailored stripped blazers and pastel shirts reminiscent of 1920’s America filtered through many of this year’s collections. ‘It is important to keep your grooming simple to complement this look’, says Michael. ‘Short back and sides with length on top and a good old fashioned clean shave will do the job’ he adds.
Michael Douglas says, ‘Preppy Suits on the runway were mostly complimented by regatta-ready side partings. To recreate this look at home hair should be shampooed clean and towel dried. Prep by firstly washing hair with head&shoulders Itchy Scalp to ensure your visible parting is flake-free and then finish with a lightweight wax. Gently work this through the hair and sweep to your preferred direction.’
Andrew Davis says, ‘Luxury sportswear for S/S14 has got game. Highlights include lace cutaways exposing the chest. The look is super-clean shaven – face and body. To best rock this look achieve the same smooth skin appearance by removing any chest and body hair using the Braun cruZer body trimmer. It’s suitable for all body areas so no hair should go unnoticed and can be conveniently used in the shower or bath, giving you your desired trim in a couple of minutes.’ Michael Douglas adds, ‘this look was complimented by a cropped Caesar cut. Use mousse and leave the hair to dry naturally then use Shockwaves Re-create Styling Putty to bring hair forward across the forehead.’
1980’s re-worked fabrics, bleaching and dying techniques reappeared on the runways this season. These bold looks were accompanied by chic yet stubbly models’, says Andrew Davis. ‘Keep your stubble groomed for glory with the Gillette ProGlide Styler. It includes 3 combs for custom length, making it remarkably easy to trim and maintain the length of your beard or stubble.’
‘There was a noticeable retro 90’s throwback trend with lots of bolds and daring techno prints this season’ says Andrew Davis. ‘Statement shirts and long shorts will be on all the stylish guys come spring’ he adds. ‘Slicked back, wet look hair also been revived on the catwalks this season giving everything a very 90’s feel’ says Michael. ‘So go and grab some wet look gel, a fine toothcomb and get trending’ he adds.
